Singin' in the Rain

Set during the transition from silent film to “talkies,” my reimagining of "Singin’ in the Rain" explores how modern audiences interpret historical periods. The 1927 world is grounded in accurate silhouettes, while the films within the film take on a heightened, dreamlike quality through bold patterns and metallic textures that remain dynamic in black and white.

Color and silhouette define character. Lina Lamont appears in vibrant purples, pinks, and reds with exaggerated, glamorous shapes that reflect her artificiality, while Kathy Selden is grounded in blues, greens, and soft, fluid fabrics that emphasize her naturalism. Don Lockwood’s palette shifts toward blue as he falls in love with Kathy, visually marking his emotional transformation. Supporting characters reinforce these relationships, with Cosmo Brown mirroring Don in complementary tones, and figures like Roscoe Dexter and R.F. Simpson subtly adapting to the stylized worlds of the film sets. In the “Broadway Melody” sequence, an all-white palette creates the illusion of black-and-white film within a live performance.
