Envoi

The short film "Envoi" explores the trauma of a retired ballerina, Edith, who is invited back to her former studio for an alumni performance. Edith is introduced in a state of emotional and physical disarray, her dim bedroom cluttered and sterile, broken only by a lingering pink vanity from her childhood. At home, she wears dark, loose, and unkempt clothing, reflecting her depression and withdrawal. These present-day visuals are contrasted with flashbacks of her childhood under a controlling maternal figure, revealing the pressure and trauma embedded in her training.

Upon returning to the studio, Edith appears in a pink sweater and grungy green plaid skirt, attempting to compose herself within a space that holds both memory and expectation. As she prepares to rehearse, she dons a leotard that triggers a visual overlap between past and present, her reflection revealing her younger self in identical costume. In performance, past Edith is seen in a bright, white, sparkly tutu against a dark stage, a stark contrast to her present self. As the two timelines merge, Edith completes the bow of her younger self, visually collapsing the distance between memory and reality.

Across the film, costume becomes a marker of psychological duality, juxtaposing confinement and nostalgia, decay and idealization, and the lasting imprint of a life shaped by discipline and others' expectations.
